Free Keyword Research Secrets Every Business Owner Should Know

Struggling to get conversions online?
You’re not alone. A lot of business owners set up a website and just hope for the best, guessing what customers might be searching for or what words will get them noticed. The truth is, without the right keywords, your site probably isn’t reaching the people who actually want what you offer. The good news? Keyword research doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive; there are plenty of free ways to get started and see real results.

Start with Google itself
Type a word related to your business into Google and pay attention to what pops up. The autocomplete suggestions in the dropdown show you what people search for most often. Then check out the “People Also Ask” box and the “Related Searches” section. These are full of real questions your customers are asking. Not only do they help with SEO, but they also give you ready-made ideas for blogs, FAQs, and even ad copy.

Dig deeper with Google Keyword Planner
If you want more detail, Google Keyword Planner is free to use once you set up a Google Ads account (don’t worry, you can set one up without having to spend anything). Just switch to “Expert Mode,” create an account without launching a campaign, and head to “Keyword Planner”. From there, you can type in your keywords and see search ranges and competition levels. This is extremely useful for figuring out which keywords are actually worth targeting and which ones are too competitive to bother with.

Check out SEMrush’s free tools
SEMrush also has a free version that’s pretty handy. You get 10 searches a day for things like keyword analysis, domain insights, and backlink checks, plus a few extras like SEO Ideas and their Writing Assistant (limited, but still useful). While it’s not as open as Google Keyword Planner, SEMrush gives you more accurate data, and since the daily limit resets, you can research up to around 300 keywords a month if you use it effectively. That’s plenty to get your website moving in the right direction.

How to use keywords on your site
Once you’ve got your keywords, the trick is to work them into your site in a way that feels natural. Your main keyword should show up in the page title, meta description, and your main heading, which are the big signals Google pays attention to. In your content, use a mix of your main keyword and related terms; avoid using the same keyword multiple times on multiple pages. Secondary headings are great for questions and supporting keywords. And don’t forget the behind-the-scenes stuff. URLs, image names, and alt text should also use keywords where they make sense. Internal links are another easy win; link between your own pages using relevant keywords as the anchor text. Done right, this makes your site easier for both people and search engines to understand, and it means your content has a much better chance of ranking.
